Oregano
Dried oregano
Oregano is an aromatic and versatile herb that originates from the Mediterranean region, where it has been used for centuries as an essential part of cooking. The dried herb, known for its bold, slightly bitter flavor with hints of warmth and sweetness, is a cornerstone of Italian, Greek, and Mexican cuisine. Oregano is especially popular in dishes like pizza, pasta sauces, and salads, but it also works brilliantly as a flavor booster in marinades, soups, and stews.

What is oregano?
Oregano is an herb most people associate with dishes like pizza and pasta, but it can do much more than that. With its small green leaves and distinctive aroma, oregano has found its way into kitchens all over the world. Oregano originates from the Mediterranean region and grows wild in hills and mountains in places like Greece and Italy.
Oregano, with its Latin name Origanum vulgare, is easily mistaken for marjoram. The herb comes from a plant with a bushy growth habit and pink and white flowers. Both oregano and marjoram are part of the mint family. The plant has dense, small leaves that grow on thin stems. Oregano is therefore also called mountain mint.
Besides pizzas and pasta dishes, oregano is regularly used in soups and slow-cooked dishes and stews, where it can really add an intense flavor. Oregano can handle heat and can be added from the start to give the dish a more robust flavor. Its intense taste makes oregano a perfect match with ingredients like tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and meat—especially lamb, chicken, and beef. When used with other herbs like thyme, rosemary, and basil, oregano creates a harmonious flavor balance that highlights the dishes’ natural aromas.
Whether you use it fresh or dried, oregano is an indispensable ingredient in any kitchen that loves authentic, flavorful dishes.
